Wagering
Any casino expert will tell you, there are professional card players, dice shooters, and sports handicappers, but there are no professional slot players. That is because the outcomes in slots is totally random and there is no way to hedge your bets. Still, there are folks out there claiming to be slot machine experts with a winning system to sell, and there are people who buy them.
Selling a winning system for playing slots might be the only sure way to make money in the endeavor. Real gambling experts, even those who write for “Simply Slots” magazine will swear - there is no system for winning at slots.
Know the Odds
That does not mean money cannot be won playing slot machines or that knowledge of the rules of each machine and a little common sense can go a long way to improving a player’s chances of success. The only real decision for a slots player is which machine to play - that in itself can be challenge enough. There are hundred of types of slot machines all with their special features and bonuses.
For instance, there are machines with a single line payout, that is if the three or five symbols are all the same on the middle line of the machine - jackpot. From there it gets more complicated. Some have multiple line payouts, some of the pay lines diagonal. For these, as with all slot machines, the decision to play it should be based on the payout odds as measured against the number of coins that have to be played on each turn to get the best odds.
Probability
This was not always the case. These days slot machine payouts are strictly regulated by the gaming commission that licenses the casino and all the machines must conform to those guidelines. Before computer-controlled slots it was possible to determine which machines would offer the better payouts by computing the probability of symbol sequences by counting the number of symbols on each reel. It was simply a matter of mathematics. Play the machine long enough based on your calculations and at a certain point, it would hit the jackpot.
There were even teams of professional players who capitalized on this system. Often the sequence for paying off the jackpot linked several machines together. Teams of players would go in and play the linked machines, increasing the odds that when the odds came up to pay the jackpot, one of the team would hit it.
