Valley Vegas Nites Fighting for
Machines
Earlier this
year the California State Department of Justice seized 62 slot
machines from a company called Valley Vegas Nites claiming they were
operating illegal slot machine gambling. The group wants the judge to
throw out the search warrant, as that would also remove the
misdemeanor counts of possessing slot machines that the group is
facing as well.
The company
rents the machines to various charities and non profits so that they
can raise money with Vegas style casino night functions. They were
told they needed to get a license to distribute and manufacture slot
machines, but as this wasn’t what they did, they didn’t think they
needed the license. They are now looking at large fines and jail term,
not to mention the loss of their business due to the raid. The company
alleges that their slot machines are legal for they are games of
skill, not of chance. You have to hit a button to stop the wheels; it
doesn’t just do it on its own.
They also say
that the slot machine seizure was illegal as the state searched a
Salida storage facility and seized the slot machines there – and the
warrant was only for the company offices in Riverbank. The hearing is
scheduled for November 16.
