UK Slot Machine Hearings

The UK has just started the next round in the selection process as to who will win the right to become a Las Vegas style slot machine Mecca. They have it narrowed down to Blackpool, Cardiff, Glasgow, the Millennium Dome, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield. Wembley Stadium was on the list until last week when due to local opposition, their bid was withdrawn.

When all is said and done, there will be only one winner – although it was previously touted that there would be up for 40 slot machine casinos – which makes it even tougher competition. Out of an original 27 applications, they have whittled it down to the final seven, and then one of them will get the casino. They first dropped it down to eight, hoping that would keep opposers happy, but ended up dropping it to one in order to placate those that would rather there were none at all.

There will be some smaller casinos, but there will only be one “super casino” as they are calling it. Their goal is to have a Las Vegas or Atlantic City type slot machine gambling parlor that is an all in one entertainment venue. There will be gambling, shops, restaurants, etc. all aimed at pleasing the customer and bringing in more money.
