Tribal Fairness Needed in CA

The tribes in California are calling for fairness – especially after the signing of the compact with the Aqua Caliente Tribe. The Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians are asking for more fairness, that there is too much of a difference between the economic standing of each of the tribes in California. They say that they are not against the tribe’s new compact to bring more slot machines into their casinos, but that they are asking for the disparities between the tribes to be lessened a little.

They say that legislatures are aware of the differences between the tribes, and that if the Aqua Caliente tribe is bringing in more slot machines that each of the other tribes should be treated as fairly as they are. Kevin Siva, a Los Coyotes council member said, “We are not here to oppose the Aqua Caliente compact amendments…To support the Aqua compact without also supporting the compact of Los Coyotes and Big Lagoon tribes would be unfair to us and our people.”

The tribe is planning on staging a sit in – and fast – on the Capitol’s grounds during the last two weeks of the legislative session.
