Sun Cruz Battles Horry Over Money

Horry County needs more money and they know just where to get it. They are in the midst of a legal battle to ensure that the Sun Cruz casino gives them five percent of the boarding fees, slot machine revenue, and table revenue. Sun Cruz has decided to fight them on it as they think Horry County is just asking for too much.

Due to the passing of a recent S.C. Law that says they have the right to regulate and tax gambling boats, Horry County has the right to go after them for what they feel is only fair. The boat brings in tourists and taxes the county’s time and energy - they have to worry about public safety, they need new roads, etc. They also have very high property taxes and would like to relieve the pressure on their residents by taxing the boat instead. It would also allow them to have a paid fire department instead of the volunteer one it has right now. These are all things that they would be able to pay for with the tax.

Sun Cruz said it already offered the county part of the door, but that all the other revenue just isn’t fair to them. They feel that the county is unfairly taxing them and are going to battle it out in court. They think they stand a real chance of the county giving up when they see how much money the casino is willing to spend to fight to keep their slot machine money to themselves.
