Pennsylvania Slots on Track

It has been a long two years for Pennsylvanians and their slot machines. In 2004, the state approved bringing in casinos and slot machines, but due to red tape and unclear laws and stipulations, there haven’t been any slot machines yet. However, it looks as though things are about to change for the state, and it looks like slot machines will start making an appearance in 2007.

The first gambling licenses are expected to be awarded at the end of September, which will allow The Meadows harness-racing track to have slot machines up and running by February. Then they would continue with plans for a permanent casino which should be completed in 2008. Initially, many Pennsylvanians were unhappy with the idea of bringing in slot machines and casinos, but it looks as though people have been changing their minds. Many experts feel the amount of time it has taken for the slot machines to come in has helped their case, and has allowed many to become more comfortable with the idea. Others think that it is because of the fact that many do not want the slots at all, that it has taken so long for the slot machines to finally start coming in.

The Gaming Board is holding hearings this week to determine who will get conditional licenses, and they are also discussing changes in the July 2004 law. Lawmakers want to change provisions that allow in-state suppliers to sell slot machines to casinos, and they want to eliminate the fact that public officials can own one percent of casinos.
