No More Coins for Greektown

As of 11:59pm Thursday night, Greektown Casino was no longer a coin driven slot machine casino. The company had decided about a year ago to eliminate the tokens and go to a paper-in, paper-out kind of slot machine, but many of the tokens were still floating around out there. Customers could cash them in up until the deadline, but after that they just became worthless pieces of metal.

The company thinks that this will be more convenient for them as well as their customers – instead of carrying around buckets of tokens; they can just carry around little pieces of paper. They put in a dollar; they get out a piece of paper that tells them what they have won. Many think that they will miss the sound of the coins dropping in the hopper, but casino officials think this is best.

What is well known is that those that have the coinless machines make more money. It is much easier for a slot machine player to keep pushing a button, than it is for someone to keep manually feeding a slot machine more of their money. There are other casinos in town that still have some of the coin slot machines, but they are becoming fewer and fewer.
