Maine Still Fighting Slots
State election
officials received a total of 56,000 signatures from the supporters of
bringing slot machines to a vote at the November election. The problem
is not all of them are valid signatures, and opponents say that this
is just one more reason that the slot machines should not be allowed
to come to Washington County.
The group turned
in the signatures for the slot machine initiative to be placed on the
ballot and was confident that they would be approved. However, once
the signatures were verified, it turned out that some of them were not
valid, and left the group 13,000 short. Opponents were relieved that
the slot machine initiative would not pass, until they found out that
the tribe actually attempted this before - and they were only 2,500
short of their goal as the remaining 48,000 from the previous year
were still valid.
The
Passamaquoddy Tribe is confident that now they have gotten the slot
machine initiative on the ballot, that the voters will vote to approve
it. Meanwhile, the group No Slots for ME is planning on collecting
signatures outside the November polling stations. They are hoping that
if they collect enough signatures they can get it reversed at the next
election.
