Lazy 8 Voted Down

A lawsuit has been filed by Harvey Whittemore, a developer in Sparks City. Whittemore had planned on building a casino on some of his land, and the Sparks City Council vetoed it. Whittemore is now suing for millions of dollars.

Whittemore had received an entitlement in 1994 to build on his Wingfield Springs development, a casino and resort. However, he also has a 20 acre site that is east of the highway, where he was planning on building it instead. He was selling land to Peppermill Casinos in order to make it a reality. The city council voted 3-2 that he could not build his Lazy 8 Resort, a $100 million dollar casino and resort. The planning commission had already vetoed it, and the commission echoed their ruling.

Whittemore filed a lawsuit seeking hundreds of millions in damages, as well as the ability to build the casino. He has dealt with elected officials before, being a legislative lobbyist, but he said this was the first time it had gotten personal. That personal threats and name calling had been strewn upon him and his family.
