Hastings Park Racecourse

Hastings Park has been fighting for years to get slot machines in at their racecourse, and it looks like they have finally gotten their way. The racecourse wanted to bring in slot machines to bring in more revenue for the racecourse, but the residents of East Vancouver didn’t want slot machines installed. The British Supreme Court has finally stepped in and has given the approval for the slot machines to come in.

The judge ruled that Hastings Park is city owned private land, which means they can do whatever they want with the land - and they want slot machines. In 2004, Hastings Park had received approval to bring in 600 slot machines, and the opposing residents group had it overturned. They said that the city council had no right to tell the park they could bring in slot machines.

The residents are very upset over the courts' ruling, as they didn’t realize they had no say over what goes on in their own neighborhood. The group is worried that by bringing in the slot machines, that an increase of crime is sure to follow. Needless to say, the group is probably gong to appeal the decision.
