Harrah’s Willing to Spend It to Get It

Harrah’s Entertainment is taking the show on the road, literally. They have rented a 40 foot luxury bus to drive across the state touting their agenda for slot machines. They have partnered with the Narragansett Tribe, and they are looking to bring slot machines to Rhode Island. With Election Day looming, they have decided that the in-your-face approach is what they need most now.

They are spending enough money to possibly get it – in the last three months Harrah’s has already spent over $5.2 million trying to get their message out there to the voters. They believe that if they can just get through to the voters, that they will see what a boon this is to the state. The Narragansett Indian Tribe thinks it is really a no brainer, as the money that will be coming in from the slot machines will help everyone. The income that it brings to Rhode Island would be plenty to help with the school system, counseling for problem gamblers, etc. – plus it means more jobs for the residents of the state. They say that the voters’ money is going to CT right now, and that instead they should keep it in their own backyard.

They are even touting it as the tribe’s casino, keeping Harrah’s name all but completely out of it. They are trying to make it seem as if it were really one of their own trying to help the state. They call themselves Rhode Islanders for Jobs and Tax Relief – while their opponents call themselves Save Our State.
