Gambling Gets a New Image

What gambler hasn’t dreamt of going to the glitz and the glamour of Las Vegas or Atlantic City?  Who hasn’t thought if I can make it there…only to actually go to the gambling Mecca of their dreams to discover that it ain’t all its cracked up to be? Driving through the slums of Atlantic City to reach the casinos and the boardwalk can be a harsh eye-opener for many.

Not that long ago, if you gambled it was considered a sin really – something to be hidden from others – your shame to carry around. But now the casinos are catering to people trying to get people to come play. They want gamblers to have the time of their life and are doing everything they can to get them there. Riverboat gambling trips, outings to the casinos from senior citizen centers, etc., all add to the purveying thought that gambling does not have the social stigma that it used to have.

Every time you turn on a TV set you are inundated with ads for the “World Poker Tour” or “Celebrity Poker Showdown” – just two of the ways that the media is showing you to look how celebrities are playing cards in casinos and everyone loves the slot machines. Americans are buying it hook, line, and sinker. Between the shows on TV that focus on the gambling, movies, and the TV serials that set themselves in casinos, etc. – gambling has become the new thing to do if you want to be cool.
