Gambling? (Part I)

Gambling is quickly becoming one of the major sources of income for many of our country’s citizens. It is also becoming the bane of others’ existence. The lure of gambling is much too hard to resist for many of these people, and they end up in serious trouble trying to strike it rich. Many of those that are drawn in are poor, and are looking for a quick fix to their financial troubles.

According to Webster’s Dictionary, gambling is: “1 a: to play a game for money or property; b: to bet on an uncertain outcome; 2: to stake something on a contingency: take a chance.” It also goes on to talk about risk, venture, and hazards. Definitely a negative slant on something people think is so much fun. Experts call slot machines the “crack cocaine” of gambling, as it is a quick hit and then you keep hitting it, and hitting it, until eventually it destroys you.  And still, many will keep playing, hoping that the next time is the one that they will win.

Pathological Gambling Disorder is defined as: “Pathological gambling disorder occurs when a person gambles compulsively to such an extent that the wagering has a severe negative effect on his or her job, relationships, mental health, or other important aspects of life. The person may continue to gamble even after they have developed social, economic, interpersonal, or legal problems as a result of the gambling.” It is one of the worst of the social ills as people have a hard time understanding gambling addiction. Most feel that you aren’t hooked on a drug or on alcohol, so you can just stop going. This attitude makes it tough for those with problems to get help.

Slot machine gambling of course is not the only type of gambling, and we will get into the various ways that you can lose your money in the next article.
