AB 2409 Stalled

The Bay Meadows Race Track in San Mateo is having problems and was counting on AB 2409 to help them out. However, the bill has been pulled from a scheduled committee hearing and has stalled out in the Legislature. The bill would have helped California’s horseracing industry, and would have helped to keep the Bay Meadows track from going under.

The activists that have been trying to help the racetrack are considerably disappointed, but are determined not to give up. IF the track goes under, it will be replaced by an extensive development project and they don’t want to see that happen. The group had gotten signatures on a petition to keep the track, but more than 100 of them were disqualified. The group is appealing that decision.

The bill ended up getting mixed up in all of the tribal compacts that had come through and were looking to be passed as well. If the bill had been passed it would have seriously helped the Bay Meadows track, for it needs the additional income. The glorified “slot machines” would have allowed patrons to bet on old races, and would have made the track a 24 hour a day slot machine casino.
