Suing for Slots

The name Charles Verhoeven has become synonymous lately with slot machine patent litigation. He has been busy representing Bally Technologies Inc. in patent cases that they have either brought against another slot machine company, or have been brought against them.

Bally is the second largest slot machine manufacturer in the world, which means they have a lot to protect. With the close competition between slot machine manufacturers it is no wonder that there are so many litigations bouncing between the companies.

Since 2004 they have been involved in several cases. They have been sued four times by the number one slot machine company International Game Technology; and they just sued IGT in September for infringing on its patent or spinning wheel indicators. Verhoeven is currently working on five different patent cases for Bally alone.

The company he works for has been involved in much patent litigation over the years. With all of the new technology coming out it is no wonder that all of the slot machine manufacturers have gotten a little litigation crazy. “There is an increasing amount of litigation in the gaming industry because the [slot] machines are becoming more sophisticated and technology is playing a larger role in many of the systems casinos use,” said Verhoeven.
