Stadium Slots?

The Marlins could be coming to Broward County if some people have their way. They would need a new stadium, and the money could come from slot machine revenue. Some people think this is a terrific idea – and they would love to see the Marlins come. Others feel that it is not what voters asked for, so it shouldn’t be allowed. That it is more of a bait and switch than anything else.  

The problem is that it wasn’t brought up before voters decided that slot machines could come to the area. The original deal was that if the voters approved the slot machines to Broward County, the money would be used for the area. The money was supposedly earmarked for police, fire, traffic relief, etc. – all things that will be impacted by the bringing in of the slot machines and casinos to the area.  

The only rational thing to do is to go back to the voters and ask them what they think – and have them approve a ballpark. If they vote yes, then the state can have its ballpark, and everyone will be happy. However, they do have the option of just doing it, without asking anyone. If they do that, experts think that the voters will feel betrayed by their politicians, and that will undoubtedly be reflected come election time.

The Marlins would pay part of the expense as well, so it wouldn’t all come from the voters, but the lion’s share definitely would.
