Slot Machines Affect Structure (Part
V)
The politicians do
their share of getting involved in the slot machine issues as well.
Many of the state’s representatives have voted against the legislation
to bring in slot machines. They think that it is a slippery slope that
Pennsylvania is not ready to travel. Those that think the slot
machines are a good idea are afraid of how they will affect each
individual area. There is already a lot of fighting among the
communities to see who gets what and how much.
Rep. Mario Scavello
(R-Monroe) is one of those who voted against the slot machine
legislation. He thinks that the amount of money the slot machines are
supposedly going to bring in is just not true. He has accepted that
the slot machines will come to the Poconos, but he is now fighting a
different fight. He is trying to change a bill that requires his
county to share its economic gaming allocations with the other
counties that surround it. He says that they will have to give up part
of their revenue to other counties including Luzerne County where the
Mohegan Sun is going to be located. He said they are the only location
that has to do that, and that means millions of dollars out of their
pockets.
Those that are
opposed to slots say that this is just one more reason why they should
not have been legalized. They say that the political upheaval added
into the crime and corruption that will undoubtedly follow the slot
machines is just too much for the state to handle. They say that the
state cannot handle the slots and that the bill to legalize them must
be overturned before it is too late.
Basically, what it
all adds up to, is that with all of the factors that get used to
figure out if slot machines are going to be good for the state or not,
it is almost impossible to determine if the state will be successful.
They can try and listen to everyone, which is what it seems they have
been doing for the most part, and then they can just try and come to
some sort of agreement that makes the most people happy, and hope it
works out for them.
