Slot Machines Affect Structure (Part I)

Slot machines are coming to Pennsylvania; the Mohegan Sun is planning on opening next month. Still, there are many concerns that need to be dealt with. No one knows for sure what sort of effect the slot machines are going to have on the state. There are two factions at work in the state, those that think the slot machines will have a positive effect on the state, and of course, those who believe it will be a negative effect. Those on the positive side are really looking at the business profitability of having slot machines in the state. Those that think it will be a negative for the state, are more focused on what sort of social issues will come from the change.

They all agree on one thing however, that to know what kind of effect slot machines will have on them, they need to study other states that have had similar influxes of slot machines, and see how they fared. They are studying Las Vegas, Nevada; Atlantic City, New Jersey; as well as other areas to see how the slots affected them negatively and positively.

Once they have compiled all of their data, they are then going to look at how they can avoid the traps and pitfalls that the other states fell into when legalizing slot machines. Their hope is to avoid many of the same problems. They are aware that they will not be able to avoid all of them, but by using the others as models, they might be able to avoid the big ones.
