Should Video Slot Machines be Legalized?

Indiana has shown a large dependence on slot machine gambling revenue. Many in the state feel that there is nothing worse than having the state dependent on something that they feel just leads to more trouble within the state itself. Yes, they agree that the slot machines are bringing in revenue, but they are also bringing in crime and personal troubles for the gamblers.

The latest decision that needs to be made is whether or not video slot machines should be regulated and legalized in clubs and taverns. Groups such as the American Legion have long benefited from the revenue the slot machines bring in, but law enforcement has been cracking down on clubs such as theirs and are now enforcing the law that says they cannot have slot machines. The governor, Mitch Daniels, feels that the laws need to be changed to keep up with the changing times of the state.

The legislature will not even consider the idea of allowing those service type clubs to keep the slot machines, and although many thought the General Assembly might allow discussion of the concept, they did not. Then there is the problem that not all of the slot machines have been eliminated. Some areas that do not serve alcohol are still permitted to run the slot machines.

Proponents of legalizing the slot machines think that the best way to keep it safe is to make it legal, since so many people are doing it anyway. All that is left now for the clubs is a lack of slot machine revenue, and a lack of answers from their government.
