Seminole Tribe Hoping for Federal Help

The Seminole Tribe of Florida is hoping that proposed federal guidelines will give them what they want. Next month new guidelines will be issued, and they are hoping that they will be able to open Las Vegas-style slot machines. They want the same opportunities that the Broward County racetracks now have.

The US Department of Interior is pushing to get it completed as the negotiations between the state and the tribe has failed. When they would be able to start operating the slot machines has not been determined yet, but assuming the new regulations get passed, it would probably state that information.

The tribes currently have the right to have the same gambling options as other non-tribe casinos within the same state under the Federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. Since it has been over a year since Broward County has approved Class III slot machines, the tribe says they are entitled to the same thing, which would put them on “even footing as the non-Seminole gaming facilities,” said Tribal Counselor Max Osceola.

The US Interior tried to get the state to come to an agreement with the Seminoles, but so far Governor Jeb Bush has not been able to come to an agreement with them. He has until next month to do so, or the federal government will have to step in.
