Republican Leaders Benefit from CA Indian Tribes

With the big push from the Republicans to try and get lucrative compacts for additional casinos and slot machines for several Indian tribes, it has paid off for them monetarily. The tribes are putting their money behind the Republican leaders, instead of the Democrats.

The National Congress of American Indians has an annual convention, which was in Sacramento this week – and they talked mostly about politics. They are pushing millions behind the Republicans as they see the steps they have taken as wanting to benefit the Indians and their needs for more slot machines and casinos. The Legislature in Sacramento just spent a long time trying to figure out if expansion of tribal gaming was the best thing for the state, and with time running out they ended up leaving at the end of the session with no vote taken.

With the Legislature currently made up of many Democrats, the Indians saw this as a slight to them, and are pulling their money from those campaigns. The Democrats have been mostly pro-casino and pro-slot machine up until this point, and with the last minute scramble from the Republicans, one can only think that this was deliberate on the part of the Republicans to take campaign financing out of their pockets.

The only question that remains is what if the Indians manage to get the Republicans in office by backing them? Once they are in office, then the compacts will come up for a vote – next January. Will the Republicans vote the way the Indians want them to, since they just funded their campaigns, or will they revert to the way they used to vote, and vote against the compacts? By that point the tribes won’t have any say in the matter as the election will already be over and done with. Whether or not they get slot machines at that point will be up to those that are now in the Legislature, not those who had stood by them up to this point.
