Pennsylvania Readying for Slots

Pennsylvania is waiting this week to see what state regulators are going to do. It is expected that they will be issuing five conditional slot machine licenses to five racetracks; however, some are doubtful that it will ever happen.

The state passed into law the legalization of slot machines two years ago, but has yet to issue any slot machine licenses. They say that they have been making sure that all provisions have been made before they bring in the slots. They would rather be cautious about the slot machines, instead of heading up trouble after the slot machines are already in place.

When and if they do issue the slot machine licenses, they will be issuing five initially, with a sixth slot machine license to possibly come in October. Then, in December, they decide on permanent slot machine licenses for those that have already been approved for the temporary slot machine license. They also take a look at the 15 casino developers who are vying for seven additional slot machine licenses, with a 14th slot machine license going towards the winner of a harness racing license.

Racetrack owners are already spending millions getting themselves ready for the slot machines to come in, now they just need the actual slot machines. The state has approved a maximum of 61,000 slot machines, and if all are brought in, it will give Pennsylvania the second largest amount of slot machines in the country – behind Nevada.
