Pennsylvania Wants the Penguins

Pennsylvania wants the Penguins and they want a new stadium – the problem is where the money is going to come from. Thy think they have a solution, but it involves invoking Plan B.

If the Isle of Capri casino is awarded the slot machine license to bring in the Pittsburgh slot machine casino, they have pledged $290 of their slot machine revenue to the building of the arena. If they do not get the award – and many people seem to think that they won’t - then Plan B will be used instead.

Plan B says that the casino group that does win the license will fund the new arena, with help from the Penguins and the slot machine financed state economic development fund. Most people don’t understand how this works though, and think that the people will be funding the arena. If Isle of Capri does not get the slot machine license, it will be because another casino has proved they will be able to bring in more money than them. This brings in more money to the stadium, yes, but it also brings in more money for tax relief.

It currently looks as though Forest City Enterprises is the forerunner to get the casino. It is in the state’s best interest to take care of the Penguins, and the current owner does not have ties to the region so he is perfectly happy to move the franchise to wherever they get the best deal.
