Mohegan Sun Gets Slot Machine License

Mohegan Sun is flying high these days; they have finally gotten their slot machine license from the state of Pennsylvania. The slot license has been a long time coming, and they are more than happy that it has finally been issued. They have already started construction, and believe that they will be up and running late this year.

Where the track’s old grandstand used to stand is now going to be a million dollar casino. There will be over 1,000 slot machines, a food court, bars, entertainment areas, etc. That is just the beginning of their plans – they have another phase that will be separate from the initial casino that they will start working on as soon as they are finished the first phase. They expect to break ground for that portion of the construction in early 2007.

Ever since the Mohegan Sun bought the racetrack from Penn National in January of 2005 – they have been doing extensive renovations getting ready to bring slot machines to the track. The track originally opened in 1965, and has seen many renovations since its opening. The last renovation cost several million, and it redid the first floor of the track. The grandstand was redone at that time, and now the grandstand is gone.

They also renovated the area of the clubhouse where people can watch the racing, which is especially helpful now that there isn’t a grandstand to watch from. The racetrack has wanted to bring in slot machines for a long time to help flagging sales at the track, and ever since PA said they would be bringing slot machines to the various tracks in the state, they have been very excited. They started work almost immediately, and have just been waiting for the actual license to start bringing in their slot machines.
