Miwok Indians Make El Dorado a Deal

Tribal Chairman Nick Fonseca could not be happier. He says, “This is a historic day for our tribal nation and El Dorado County…this agreement will ensure that the residents of the county will benefit for decades to come."

What he is talking about is the compact that was signed between the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians and El Dorado County. The tribe has agreed to pay the county a minimum of $87 million over 20 years, as well as $104 million for freeway carpool lanes. Their casino project is finally on the road to success.

They have wanted to build a $200 million casino outside of Placerville, and the county has been fighting them with lawsuit after lawsuit. Finally, the county agreed to drop the lawsuits in response to the above mentioned deal. The casino will be bringing in thousands of slot machines, as well as millions of dollars for the town. They will pay the sheriffs department $500,000 annually, as well as another $500,000 in sales and hotel taxes. Residents are still fighting the casino, but the county is happy with the proposed deal.

The agreement is for 2,000 slot machines, and they would need to pay an additional $100,000 per year for each additional 100 slot machines that it adds to the casino.

"Our contributions to the county will be the single largest revenue generator of any business in the county, creating funds for the county to spend to help provide services to the local residents," Fonseca said. "We are happy to contribute this much-needed funding to improve the quality of life here in El Dorado County."
