Marati Speaks Out

Jackie Marati, a member of the group opposing slot machines at the Guam Greyhound Track, wrote a memorandum for the paper stating their case against the slot machines. She wants people to know their side of the story, and is hoping that by bringing it to the papers, that people will read the facts as she sees them and vote no for slot machines.

Marati says that although Proposal B is claiming it will bring in $3 million for health care and education, and bring in hundreds of jobs as well as revitalize tourism, that these claims are false. That they are bringing in slot machines and with them they are bringing crime and hardship to Guam instead.

She says that 90% of the slot machine revenue will go back to Guam Greyhound, with only 10% going back to Guam. She says that in order to even get that 10% the voters of Guam would need to spend $300,000 in the slot machines first. Plus, out of that $3 million only $600,000 goes to education.

She says that only Guam Greyhound will be revitalized – even though they are claiming they are good for all businesses – it just isn’t true. They will be taking money from those businesses they claim to be helping – in the form of goods and services, as well as personnel. She says that even if Guam gets the $3 million, that is $27 million back to Guam Greyhound.

She says that by allowing slot machines into Guam the voters will be destroying the area, not helping it, as the only one who will profit by this will be Guam Greyhound.
