Manning Warns of Casino Closings

Prime Minister Patrick Manning warned in his budget speech Wednesday that there could be fallout with the closing of casinos in the country. The Government is talking about closing all of the country’s casinos and private clubs, which would put roughly 15,000 employees out of work.

The immediate ban of slot machines that they have called for would “cripple the local gaming industry” according to a source within the casinos. They said that the slot machines are the majority of the casinos revenue, and without the slot machines there would be much less slot machine revenue. Each of the slot machines alone costs somewhere between $12,000 and $94,000 – so it is a significant investment for the casinos.

The casinos are aware that they would have to close without the revenue that the slots would bring them, and they are seeking legal representation to keep the casinos open, and eliminate the ban.

The casinos were also upset that there was no discussion between them and government officials as to the ban of the slot machines, or any of the casino business that ad gone on before the Budget Speech this week. Normally there is an open form of communication between the groups, and this time there wasn’t – so there is some confusion on the part of the casinos as to what happened.
