Macau Has Its Own Troubles

Everyone is calling Macau the next Las Vegas, but they have issues that need to be solved before they can even hope to compete. They have a corrupt government; they have a national obsession with gambling, and an expansion rate that would make anyone ill to think about it.

Beijing is trying to put a crackdown on the gambling in their country, especially the amount of corruption that goes along with it. Over the past few years, many corrupt officials in the government have managed to gamble away billions in the casinos of Macau. The government is trying its hardest to eliminate the corruption.

Their second problem is the high level of gambling addiction in the country. The casinos account for 80% of the economic activity in Macau, but experts say that this number is actually much higher than is reported. They have tried to boost the economy with the addition of more slot machines and casinos, and only those that live in Macau or have obtained a special permit may work in the casinos. This has significantly helped with the local economy by lowering unemployment rates.

In 1970 Stanley Ho of the company SJM opened a 24 hour slot machine and gambling empire that set the tone for the way gambling currently is in the country. He still owns most of the casinos in the country. Even the prostitutes gamble in their country. There is such an epidemic, that many officials just don’t know where they can go from here.
