How is the Island Surviving? 

With the influx of slot machines and casinos coming into Macau, one cannot wonder how they will be staffed and how the rest of the island will survive along with the new additions. As it stands right now, the island has become one large construction site, with slot machine casinos going up right, left and center. 

The amount of money that the slot machines are bringing into the country is astounding. The Sands literally paid for itself in its first year of operation. It is the world’s largest casino, and to stay there you either have to know someone really well, or lose a whole lot of money. Only high rollers get to stay in their suites, as they really aren’t a hotel.  

Macao likes the fact that their young citizens are now staying instead of moving away. The slot machine casinos have offered them opportunities with jobs at the casinos, and now many of them are making very good money. But there just aren’t enough of them to staff all of the hotels and casinos that are going in. There is also the fact that with all of these slot machines coming in, what is happening to the culture of Macao? Experts fear that eventually Macao will become a shell of who they used to be, with the casinos and slot machines dominating everything.
