Long Found Guilty of Illegal Gambling

It took a jury all of 45 minutes to find Michael Long guilty of operating illegal slot machines. He was the owner of the Pot of Gold, an eight liner game room. An eight liner is a slot machine that you play hoping to match pictures in rows that run eight down, eight across and eight diagonally.

He was operating the illegal slot machines and was busted by police, who seized the slot machines as well as cash from the raid. The judge gave him two years probation and a $2,000 fine on each charge, and the sentences will run at the same time.

Long is appealing the verdict and hopes to get both his cash and his slot machines back. He says the law states that you cannot give a prize that is worth more than $5, which he says he didn’t do. He gave winners cash that they could go purchase something for under $5 at stores like Albertsons or Wal-Mart. They then had to turn the receipt for what they had paid for back into the hall.

Each player signed a contract with him that said they would abide by the rules, and that they wouldn’t use the money to buy anything that was illegal to buy with the winnings. It specifically stated, “lottery tickets, scratch offs, alcoholic beverages, cigarettes or any item that has not been approved by the local and or state government" would not be permitted to be bought. Long is suing to get back the 100 slot machines that were taken, as well as $20,000 in cash.
