Ohio Learn and Earn Still Battling

Proponents of the Ohio Learn and Earn group don’t understand why their opponents don’t want slot machines approved for the state. They feel that it is in the best interest of the state, and for the education system in the state, that they approve the slot machines. Opponents say that the group just isn’t telling the whole story, and that their kind of money the state can do without.

The backers of the group say that the revenue from the slot machines would bring billions of dollars into Ohio’s economy, and would support a scholarship program to send top performing high school students to college. Opponents say that the group is inflating their numbers to get people to approve the slot machine measure, and that they are misrepresenting what the slot machines will actually do to their state.

The group says they would bring in $2.8 billion in annual revenue from 31,500 slot machines. More than $850 million of that money would go to the scholarship fund. They say that each slot machine would need to bring in $247 – which is low balling it, considering that the slot machines in Indiana bring in an average of $322 a day.

Opponents say the only way their numbers work is if they install the full number of slot machines approved, and get them up and running immediately – which they just don’t see possible. Plus, they say they aren’t looking at any of the negative aspects, such as the crime and bankruptcy that usually follows the installation of the slot machines to an area.
