Issue Three Raises
Issues
Issue 3 is a
constitutional amendment that will allow gambling in Ohio, and it goes
before the voters come November. It will allow more than 31,000 slot
machines to come into the state, which would be divided between seven
racetracks and two non track casinos.
Supporters say the
amendment will bring in billions of dollars with 55% going to he
operators and 30% going to college scholarships. The remainder goes to
local governments and gambling help. They say it is a win/win for the
state, and especially for the students who will benefit from the
college scholarships that will be funded by the slot machines.
Opponents say that
it is simply a monopoly given to nine people – and not only that, but
the Cleveland area gets more money than the rest of the state. Still
others say that morally gambling is wrong, and to bring it into the
state is to bring in crime and corruption as well. They say they
understand that the race tracks are in trouble, but you shouldn’t
amend the state’s constitution every time a business needs help.
Supporters say that
the billions that are going to the neighboring states should be
staying in their own backyard and helping their state instead. They
also say that after twelve years of slot machines in their state,
every high school senior that wants to go to college will be able to
afford it.
