How Many Are There?

When looking at the numbers of slot machines and casinos, the numbers can be rather staggering. In 1985 there were about 90,000 slot machines and today there are over 200,000. That is quite a bit of slot machines. Slot machines are the biggest money makers for the casinos, with 70% of their revenue coming from the slots.

But Las Vegas is not alone in its slot machine fascination. There is somewhere around 750,000 slot machines in the United States and it is a billion dollar industry. Each state has its own laws governing the slot machines as to what they will allow, and considering the fact that many states do not allow slot machines that really is a large number.

The problem of course is that with that many slot machines, you are bound to have a lot of people with gambling addictions.  It has been proven that the closer you are to a slot machine the more likely you are to develop a gambling addiction. It only takes about a year of slot machine playing to develop a serious addiction. It has been estimate that one in every 100 Americans has a serious addiction to gambling, and for those that live within 50 miles of slot machines and casino games, that number increases to 2 in every 100.

When you consider the fact that the average compulsive gambler costs society roughly $10,000 a year in lost wages, crime, etc. – gambling may bring in a lot of slot machine revenue, but it also costs society much more.
