Greed and Deceit

To coin a phrase from United States Senator George Voinovich, he feels that the constitutional amendment that will be on Ohio’s November Ballot should be called “greed and deceit.” He of course is commenting on the name of the supporters “learn and earn” and knows that if this amendment is passed, Ohio is going to be in some serious trouble.

Voinovich went to Martin’s Ferry Tuesday to talk to voters there about the dangers of bringing slot machines to Ohio. He said that the way it is written it only benefits part of Ohio and not all of it – and for that reason, as well as many others, it should be defeated and slot machines should not be allowed in the state.

He said that the amendment breaks down so that the slot machine operators end up making billions and the rest of the state picks at the scraps. He said 30% will go to scholarships, 1% for gambling education, and 55% goes to the slot machine casino owners and operators. That leaves roughly 14% to be divided up among the rest of the state – with some of that going to race track purses as well. He said those counties that get the actual slot machines in them will get somewhere between $7 and $18.4 million depending on where they are. However, those that don’t have an actual slot machine in them will get somewhere around $665,000. He also says the scholarship money will be nowhere near where they are claiming it will be. The slot machine operators – well they get a nice chunk of change – somewhere around $1.3 billion.
