Foxwoods' Court Case

There is a dispute between the Foxwoods Resort Casino and the State of Connecticut. It all stems from a promotional idea that the casino had to bring in business that the state says is gypping the state of slot machine revenue.

Fowwoods got the idea to mail coupons to customers that gave them free slot credits, worth varying dollar amounts. If the player loses, the amount played is not being counted by the casino as slot machine revenue. If the player wins, the casino is deducting that initial amount from the amount they won. State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said that the player’s loss should be counted as slot machine revenue and the state should get its share.

Until the case is decided, Foxwoods has agreed to put the amount of money being disputed, $350,000 or so thus far, into escrow. The tribe has also agreed to waive its sovereign immunity – which will allow the state to decide the issue. “This agreement with the tribe assures that it will move to resolve this dispute promptly and cooperatively,” Blumenthal said. “The tribe’s waiver of sovereign immunity in state court will simplify and speed a decision.”
