Will a New Governor Bring in Slot Machines to FL?

With the election for a new governor looming, the pro-gambling groups are pretty much jumping for joy. They want to see slot machines all over the state of Florida, and they know that whoever wins the election, they stand a pretty good chance of getting them. Will it happen overnight? No, but they know that it will happen eventually and they are willing to make it happen. They are also willing to give lots of money to make sure that whoever gets in office remembers that as well.

Charlie Crist, Republican, has accepted money in his election campaign from lots of groups, but he has also gotten money from pro-gambling proponents as well. According to the Miami Herald, he got $25,000 from the Miccosukee Tribe, $100,000 from the Pompano Harness Track, $95,000 from New Hollywood Greyhound Track, and $100,000 from New York casino developer Richard Fields. Donald Trump even threw him a party. Millions of dollars of gambling money has come into his campaign, much more than has come into the Democrats’.

Yet, both candidates have been in favor of some sort of gambling and slot machine expansion – although, Crist has been even more vehement about not bringing in new gambling than his opponent, Democrat Jim Davis. Dais said that although he was initially against the gambling in Broward, he was only against it because it wasn’t statewide, that it was just in that area and he didn’t think it was fair for those groups to have slot machines and not everyone else. Davis has also said that he wants to work on the agreement between the Seminole and Miccosukee Indians, so that there is fairness there. Crist says he is also willing to talk to them, but only if there are “reasonable arguments.”
