Davis and Crist Open to Gambling

Both Jim Davis, the Democrat candidate, and Charlie Crist, the Republican candidate, are open to the idea of expanding gambling in Florida. They have both acknowledged that they would like to reopen talks with the Seminole Indians to discuss expanding gambling and slot machines.

The Seminole Indians had wanted to expand gambling earlier this year, but talks between Governor Bush and them had not gone well. The issue is now before the U.S. Department of Interior – as Bush and the tribe were unable to reach an agreement.

Davis and Crist both believe that by allowing the casino to bring in casino style slot machines and poker that it can only benefit the state. They want to allow the expansion in return for regulations, etc., as well as more slots revenue for the state from the expansion.

Davis said that he did oppose the amendment that was to give Broward and Miami-Dade the option to bring in slot machines as well, but he says he only opposed it because he felt that it would give the pari-mutuels an unfair advantage since not everyone in the state had slot machines. He said that by making it fairer, he was in support of bringing in the slot machines. Crist keeps saying that he is opposed to gambling, but yet has admitted the possibility of expansion for the Seminoles. He just chooses not to campaign on the issue.
