Cincinnati Looking Better and Better
Officials are
slated to announce Monday if more money has been added to the pot for
legalizing slot machine gambling. They have added another $10 million
to the $23 million they were already counting on if the slot machine
initiative passes in November.
The Learn and Earn
committee has been meeting with state and city leaders to discuss the
slot machine proposal, and a deal has finally been reached.
The Hamilton County
Commission President said that a deal had been reached, but would not
say if he was now supporting it. Supposedly an additional $10 million
would be held in escrow with the Cincinnati Business Committee. Other
groups would then make applications to the fund to finance economic
development projects in the area. The local leaders would then support
Learn and Earn’s slot machine initiative.
Much of the
criticism of late is due to the fact that the group’s slot machine
proposal specifically excludes
Cincinnati
from the running to get a casino. This past May, Louis Beck offered to
pay $2 million toward another slot machine initiative that would have
allowed Cincinnati to get slot machines as well. He ran out of time to
get the necessary signatures, however, and had to withdraw his slot
machine proposal.
