Bangor Racinos Amendments

Developers are trying to bring in a $900 million gambling complex to Bangor. They are trying to bring in the development across from Bass Park, and are currently asking for a final lease agreement between the city and Bangor Historic Track, Inc.

Penn National Gaming, the owners of Bangor Historic Track, opened a temporary slot machine facility last November. The slot machine location is called Hollywood Slots, and holds almost 500 slot machines. The group now wants to bring in a permanent slot machine facility into the Riverside Block across Main Street. This complex will be much larger and will house 1,500 slot machines, which is the maximum allowed under Maine’s state laws.

The original lease agreement is being changed to include an empty lot behind the Irving Mainway store on Main Street, so that it can be used to staff parking. The lot would be completed in 2008, and would drastically change the way parking was affected in the area. Without the lot, the slot machine casino would have nowhere for their employees to park, and it would add to parking confusion and congestion in the area.

The changes will also affect how the payment arrangement is worded for the slot machines casino, as well as the amount of property taxes that the casino would be responsible for.
