Adelson vs. Wynn

Sheldon Adelson and Steve Wynn are the big names in Macau these days. Adelson is of the Las Vegas Sands, and Steve Wynn is more than well known as a gambling mogul himself. They have both recently brought their own brand of slot machine casino to Macau, and both are looking to develop the Cotai Strip further as well.

However, they don’t really care for each other, as most competitors don’t. They are constantly criticizing each other in the media, making fun of each others casinos, etc. – but what people don’t realize that if one fails, they both fail. They are fully aware of the fact that if they want people to keep playing their slot machines, people have to keep playing everyone’s slot machines.

Adelson is expecting to control roughly 60% of Macau’s gaming market by 2010, and the Sands Macau already accounts for 2/3rds of the firm’s total income.

Wynn Macau has gone for the classy approach, with high profile shopping such as Chanel and Prada, as well as the original Renoir that sits behind the front desk. The hotel has 210 gaming tables, as well as 380 slot machines. With construction of the world’s first underwater casino underway, it is no wonder that Mr. Wynn thinks he will bury Mr. Adelson in slot machine revenue alone.

The concern for many however, is the speed at which Macau is developing. There are churches that are decades old, that many are afraid will either be damaged or destroyed while all of this “progress” is going on. Wynn and Adelson both have huge slot machine casinos already, and are looking to add more. What many residents are asking however, is at what point, does it all become just too much?
