Unlawful Internet Gambling
The new Unlawful
Internet Gambling Enforcement Act is putting an end to all “unlawful
internet gambling.” Which means all lawful internet gambling is still
legal? The act was supposed to curb the billion dollar industry that
online slot machines and gambling has become, but with the way the act
is written, it isn’t doing much.
You can still
gamble on horse racing, sports, etc. – anything that is legal in your
state. Jim Leach, a Republican from Iowa, thought that the bill would
help. He said that with addictive internet gambling, "there are no
needle marks, there is no alcohol on the breath — you just click the
mouse and lose your house."
He says that it was
important to show that an online slot machine and betting parlor is
very different from going to an actual casino. He says that with the
ability to play the slot machines day or night, it can get tough for
someone with a gambling problem to say no. It is easier to stay out of
a slot machine casino, but what if the casino is in your own home?
