O’Malley Trying to Legalize Slots

Governor-elect Martin O’Malley has not changed his tune about legalizing slot machines now that he is in office. He reiterated his support for the slot machines at Maryland’s racetracks in a recent interview, and believes that legalizing the slot machines will revitalize the industry and save 18,000 jobs.

He is calling for a legalization of slots during the General Assembly session in January, but some of the legislators are saying that they are not ready to do that. O’Malley said that although he would like to see the slot machine legalized, it is not his top priority – something many are happy to hear since Governor Ehrlich spent four years trying, and failing, to pass a bill that would have legalized the slot machines.

There are three delegates-elect that are coming in as well from District 21 – and all three are opposed to the legalization of the slot machines. "I'll do anything I need to do to make sure slots don't come to Laurel," said Ben Barnes. "We have too many residential areas around what would be a slots warehouse [at Laurel Park]. It would wreak havoc on Russett and Maryland City."

He did admit however, that O’Malley will probably have a better chance at legalizing the slot machines since he is a Democrat. Joseline Peña- Melnyck also opposes the legalization of slot machines, she said, “I think slots affect those in society who have less, especially people of color. It's not a way to balance the (state) budget."
