Seneca Needs Land for Slot Machines
The Seneca
Gaming Corporation is buying two blocks of Fulton Street so that they
can add a slot machine casino. The Buffalo Common Council is in
support of the slot machine casino, in such that they limited an
environmental study of the area to be impacted by the new slot machine
casino to just two blocks. They were concerned that someone who did
not want the slot machine casino to come in would be tempted to try
and find a way around the Council’s sale of the property through the
environmental report. This way the slot machine casino can proceed as
planned.
The six members
of the council that approved the slot machine casino outvoted the
three that voted against it. The council ended up approving everything
that the mayor and the gaming corporation wanted them to approve in
reference to the slot machine casino. There was a meeting earlier in
the week where residents tried to stop the slot machine casino from
coming in; however, they chose not to listen to their pleas.
There were
various economic reports as well that stated that the thousand slot
machine casino jobs that have been promised will actually displace
higher paying jobs elsewhere around the area of the slot machine
casino. They even approved the sale of the land for one third of the
price that it was worth according to a real estate assessor. The
residents of the town are extremely upset by what they say is a
blatant political move by the mayor and the governor to get the slot
machines in town.
