Fayette County Slots Bill

A recent development on a gambling reform bill does not have the people of Fayette County very happy. House Democratic Leader H. William DeWeese has added a provision to the revised gambling reform bill that would take slots revenue from Fayette County and give it to neighboring Greene County. They had already expected to give some of their revenue to Greene, but the new provision has them giving half of their slot machine revenue, which is a much larger chunk than they had originally been told they would have to provide.

Fayette County will be hosting a 500 slot machine facility at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort & Spa in Farmington, and were expected to be bringing in roughly $548,000 a year in slot machine revenue. That number is expected to drop to more like $279,000 if the provision is passed. DeWeese district is comprised of Greene, Fayette, and Washington Counties, but Greene holds the majority of DeWeese’s voter base.

If the Senate and the Governor both sign off on the new bill, then Fayette must give Greene half of their income. As Greene is not slated to have a slot machine casino, DeWeese says this is his way of making the money flow a little more even for the other counties in the state. DeWeese’s camp could not explain why neighboring Washington County did not have to share half of their wealth however, as Washington County also has a slot machine casino – The Meadows. Many were surprised at the move, as DeWeese will probably hurt himself at the polls with Fayette County with this move.
