Saganing Gets a Casino
The Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Nation at Saganing has decided that they
want to build a slot machine and gambling casino in Saganing. The
tribe is making plans to get it underway, and the heavy equipment has
already been called in to start clearing ground.
Some people are excited by the prospect as the area has become
somewhat derelict, and where people used to hang out, there is very
little there. Bringing in casino could change all of that for the
community. Residents say that years ago there was a thriving Native
community, and now only about 58 tribal members live in the county –
and only about a half a dozen actually live on the trust land that
surrounds Saganing.
The tribe is happy because they believe that it will start to bring
their community closer together. They just built a community center,
which is helping to bring the people together, but they think that a
casino will do more than the center could. There are elders and other
tribesmen that will now travel to come for bingo games and the like,
and they know that if they have more to offer more will come.
The tribe is planning on building a 32,000 sq ft casino, with over 700
slot machines and 40 electronic game tables. It will be a much smaller
casino that the one in Mt. Pleasant, which has more than 4,000 slot
machines and 600 electronic tables.
