Penobscot Nation Seeking Slot Machines

The Penobscot Nation is trying to add slot machines to their bingo games on their reservation on Indian Island, and are asking the Maine House of Representatives to approve them. They say that they need to compete with Bangor’s Hollywood Slots and therefore need to add the slot machines during their bingo games, which are high stakes games.

They say that they would need to bring in more employees to run the slot machines, so it would be good for Maine to approve the slot machines. They would also be able to supplement their income, which would help out the tribe tremendously.

The tribe says that since the slot machines came into Bangor, they have been taking income from the tribe’s games, and with the legislature entertaining the idea of expanding slot machines in other areas of the state, the tribe cannot compete with that kind of competition.

They say that without slot machines, they will not ultimately survive. They know that there are other tribes currently trying to get slot machines as well, and they know that if the other tribes are approved they will probably get approval as well. However, they are concerned that if the bill to give them slot machines gets to Governor Balducci, that he has threatened to veto any slot machine bill that comes his way.

They say they can only hope that it ends up going to the people of Maine, for they think that they will do the right thing and approve the addition to their bingo facility. They say that their neighbors know that the tribe is just trying to do the right thing for their people.
