NBA Games Affect Vegas Slots

For the first time, Las Vegas was host to the NBA All-Star games, and because of that, their slot machine revenue was down. Last year they saw a huge increase in revenue from the year before, and this year they only saw a small increase.

The majority of that increase was due to the fact that the games fell during the Chinese New Year, and because of that there was a lot of baccarat playing going on, most of it with very high wagers. If the state had not had the games coincide with the Chinese New Year, they would not have had those large baccarat wagers, and thus they would have lost money for the month of February.

Experts say that traditionally, during the Chinese New Year, their slot machine revenues are down because the majority of players choose the baccarat games over the slots. This year, they were down as usual, but they were also down because of the basketball game, so they had double the decrease with their slot machine revenue than they normally would.

With the Chinese New Year, and it being a three day President’s Day weekend, they had the foot traffic, but the games took a large portion of their gambling traffic. It seems that the people that came in for the games had no interest in playing the slot machines or the table games in the casinos.
