Kanawha County Will Vote Last

Once West Virginia told the various counties that they could hold elections to see if their residents would allow table games to join their slot machines, the tracks wasted no time in trying to set up viable voting dates. At first it seemed that they would all have the same date, but things quickly changed.

All four counties were going to vote on June 9th, however, Kanawha and Hancock Counties were late with their advertising paperwork – so they were not able to make the initial deadline. Ohio and Jefferson Counties will continue to vote on the same day as both of them were able to make their deadlines.

Then Hancock and Kanawha decided that they would both hold the vote on June 30th instead, but now only Hancock will, with Kanawha voting on August 11th. The counties had to advertise the elections for at least 30 days before they voted, but this deadline was not met which is why they were off.

Kanawha decided to go for the later date, for they have a mandatory 90 day scheduling of elections, and wanted to ensure that there would be no problems with the vote later on. They said that had they not met all requirements and the vote didn’t go the way someone liked they could appeal the vote.

Kanawha’s track, Tri-State, is a subsidiary of Hartman and Tyner, Inc. – and they asked the county commissions office to postpone the voting. The county commissioner’s office voted unanimously to make the vote date August 11th instead. The commission thought it was the best move to simply scratch what they had and start over so that there could be no chance of there being a problem with the election.
