Major Growth for Macau

With Macau being the place to be and the place to be seen, it is no wonder that their first quarter earning would be large. Their first quarter earnings are already showing a 43.5% gain over last year. Between their gaming and betting receipts, they brought in $2.26 billion in revenue.

The majority of that revenue comes from the casinos and specifically, the slot machines. Around 99% of the revenue came from the casinos just from January to March. Gaming industry’s revenue went up 8.6% over fourth quarter 2006.

Slot machines, always a big money maker, went up 72.2% in gross receipts for the first quarter – which was, of course, better than last year. Last year it took the first whole quarter for them to go up 3.4% - whereas in the first three months of this year they have already gone up 4.1%. Slot machines themselves increased 80% and there are more than 7,300 slot machines in Macau now.

Baccarat continues to be the game of choice for many bringing in 85.5% of the gaming sector’s gross receipts. Most of the games saw double digit increases, but Baccarat brought in the most. There are 25 casinos in Macau, with only four operators running them.
