Slot Machines Not Legal
Many of the city of Jacksonville, Florida’s slot machines are not
legal according to the city sheriff. Sheriff John Rutherford said that
the slot machines are not legal and that he was pulling the plug on
them. This of course is upsetting for many residents as they enjoy
going to the arcades to play the slot machines.
They say that they are simply a staple of the community, and that
people play them for fun. The Sheriff said that it doesn’t matter
because the slot machines are illegal and they have to be removed –
and that they are games of chance. Residents say that the Sheriff
should be concentrating on things that actually cause harm, and not
harassing good citizens who are just trying to have some fun.
However, the sheriff says that he cannot pick which laws to enforce
and which ones to ignore, that the law says slot machines are illegal,
and therefore these machines have to go. He said that he will be
arresting anyone found in possession of the slot machines at their
arcades. He said the machines are victimizing their citizens and that
the county of Duval would not allow that.
Many of the arcades have already shut down for fear of being arrested,
and having their slot machines seized by the county. Fans of the slot
machines are asking the sheriff to please back off on the arcades as
it is the only fun they get and if they want to throw their money away
they should be able to do so. A court case is under appeal and if it
finds that the games are legal, then the arcades should be able to
open again.
